SAT/PSAT, Algebra 2 (Trig), Writing and Chemistry — the year the SAT comes into view.
10th graders take the PSAT in October, and strong PSAT scores can lead to scholarships. We offer SAT/PSAT prep, Algebra 2 (Trig), Chemistry and Writing, with Regents and AP preparation.
What we teach in 10th grade
10th grade is when the PSAT arrives and the SAT stops being abstract. The program covers:
- SAT/PSAT — the Digital SAT's reading and writing and math sections, taught from the latest tests. This is the on-ramp to our SAT and PSAT prep program.
- Algebra 2 (Trig) — the third course in our math sequence, the material of this year's Regents exams, taught ahead of the school calendar.
- Chemistry — the Chemistry Regents, with the problem-solving that students find hardest covered first.
- Writing — responses to the New York Times and other sources, corrected and returned weekly.
Students who enjoy math can continue competition work with AMC 10, and those planning AP Computer Science can begin Java now.
How a week looks
Saturday classes in Flushing, in person or online. Weekday online tutoring is available for homework help and extra practice, and it is especially useful in the run-up to the October PSAT and June Regents.
Who teaches
NYS-certified teachers, with teaching assistants available during and after class. ABCMath has prepared Flushing students for the SAT for 30 years; the founder has taught SAT math, geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus for more than 20 of them.
What comes next
11th grade is the busiest year: the SAT, AP exams and Regents all arrive, alongside Pre-Calculus and Calculus. The year before this one is on the 9th grade page.

Frequently asked questions
When do 10th graders take the PSAT?
In October, through their school. The PSAT uses the same digital format as the SAT, so it is the first real look at what the SAT will ask, and strong scores can qualify students for scholarships.
Should SAT prep start in 10th grade?
Yes, in a measured way. Our SAT/PSAT class in 10th grade builds the reading, writing and math that both tests share, so the 11th grade SAT is a matter of practice rather than new material.
What is the Algebra 2 (Trig) class?
Algebra 2 (Trig) is the third course in our math sequence, after Algebra 1 and Geometry. It covers the Algebra 2 and trigonometry material on the Algebra 2 Regents, taught ahead of the school calendar.
Which Regents exams come in 10th grade?
Typically the Geometry Regents (or Algebra 2 for students a year ahead) and the Chemistry Regents. Our Chemistry course covers the Chemistry Regents, and our Geometry and Algebra 2 (Trig) classes cover the math.
