What we teach in 9th grade

9th grade is the first year that goes on the transcript colleges read, and the first year of Regents exams. The program covers:

  • Geometry — the second course in our math sequence, taught ahead of the school calendar so the material is familiar when the school reaches it, with a focus on the question types the Regents exams use.
  • Biology — the Living Environment Regents, taught for understanding first and then for the exam.
  • Advanced Literature and Writing — reading the New York Times and other sources, then writing responses that are corrected and returned, so analytical writing improves every week.

Students strong in math can add AMC 10 competition prep, and those interested in programming can start Python or Java alongside.

How a week looks

Saturday classes in Flushing, in person or online. Weekday online tutoring adds live help with school homework and Regents practice between Saturdays, which matters most in the weeks before June exams.

Who teaches

NYS-certified teachers who teach these same Regents subjects, with teaching assistants on hand during and after class. Our math program has run in Flushing for 30 years, and the same sequence continues through calculus.

What comes next

In 10th grade students take the PSAT in October and begin SAT/PSAT preparation alongside Algebra 2 (Trig), Chemistry and writing. Students coming from middle school can see the SHSAT years on the 7th and 8th grade page.

Frequently asked questions

Which Regents exams do 9th graders usually take?

Most 9th graders take the Algebra 1 Regents, or the Geometry Regents if they finished Algebra 1 in 8th grade, plus the Living Environment (Biology) Regents. Our Algebra 1, Geometry and Biology courses are built around those exams.

What is the Geometry class?

Geometry is the second course in our math sequence, after Algebra 1 and before Algebra 2 (Trig). It covers the Geometry Regents material, taught ahead of the school calendar so students arrive at each topic already familiar with it.

Is 9th grade too early to think about the SAT?

It is early for test-taking but not for the skills. The reading and writing in Advanced Literature and the reasoning in Geometry are the same skills the SAT tests two years later. Formal SAT and PSAT prep begins in 10th grade.

My child did not take the SHSAT. Can they still join?

Yes. The 9th grade program is for any high school student in Queens who wants to stay ahead in math, science and writing, whichever school they attend.
