ABCMath Academy · Flushing, NY · Since 1996
Math Tutoring in Flushing, Queens for Grades 3–12
Better grades in math, from 3rd grade arithmetic to AP Calculus, with NYS-certified teachers and weekday homework help.
Math is the subject where a small gap turns into a bad year. A student who never quite got fractions struggles with ratios in 6th grade, with algebra in 8th, and with the SAT in 11th. ABCMath has taught math in Flushing since 1996, to more than 5,000 students, and the method has not changed: find the gap, close it, then teach a year ahead so school feels easy.
Math by grade
Grades 3–5: foundations
Place value, multi-digit operations, fractions, decimals and percents, word problems and the first geometry. Taught in the format of the NYS Math test, with weekly practice. This is also where we spot the students who are ready to move faster. Classes: 3rd & 4th grade, 5th grade. See also G&T and NYS test prep.
Grades 6–8: pre-algebra, algebra and the SHSAT
Ratios and proportions, integers, equations and inequalities, linear functions, geometry and probability, taught one to two years ahead of the school sequence. For most of our students this is also SHSAT math: the 8th grade exam draws on exactly this material. Classes: 6th grade, 7th & 8th grade, SHSAT prep.
Grades 9–12: Algebra through Calculus
Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Precalculus and Calculus, aligned to what each student is taking in school and to the Regents exam at the end of the year. Our high-school math classes stay a chapter ahead of school so the student has seen the material once before the teacher presents it. Classes: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade; Regents prep; AP Calculus; SAT math.
How we raise a math grade
- Diagnose. Every new student is placed after a short assessment. A 7th grader whose problem is really 5th grade fractions is taught fractions first.
- Close the gap. Targeted practice on the missing skills, checked by the teacher and the TA, until the student can do it without help.
- Get ahead. Once the foundation holds, the class teaches the next unit before school does. Seeing material twice is what turns a C into an A.
- Keep it there. Weekly homework, regular tests, and weekday tutoring for the weeks when school moves fast.
Homework help during the week
Weekend classes build the skills; weekday online tutoring keeps the school grade up. Students get a live hour of math and an hour of English each week with an instructor, working on that week's assignments and the topics the class flagged. It is the right option for a student who understands the material in class and still loses points on homework and tests. Details: weekday online tutoring.
For students who are ahead
Students who find school math easy are moved up a level, and can add AMC 8, 10 and 12 competition math. Competition problems teach the reasoning that the SHSAT, the SAT and later AP Calculus reward, and they keep a strong student challenged.

Frequently asked questions
My child’s math grade dropped this year. Where do we start?
Call us or fill in the contact form. We place each student after a short diagnostic so the class matches what they actually need, not just their grade. If the gap is in earlier material, we go back and fix it; most falling grades come from a few missing foundations, not from the current unit.
Do you offer one-on-one tutoring or only classes?
Our core program is small weekend classes taught by NYS-certified teachers, with TAs for individual help during and after class. Weekday online tutoring adds a live hour of math each week for homework and targeted practice.
Can you help with homework?
Yes. Weekday online tutoring is built for exactly that: an hour of math and an hour of English each week with a live instructor, working on the student’s own school assignments and the areas the weekend class flagged.
Is the class in person or online?
Both. In-person classes run in Flushing at 43-55 Kissena Blvd and 140-22 Beech Ave; live online classes cover the same material for families elsewhere in Queens and NYC.
What if my child is ahead in math?
Our classes teach one to two grade levels ahead, and students who are ready can move up. Advanced students can add AMC 8, 10 and 12 competition math, or start SHSAT and SAT work early.
