Enrichment A — the first step in a program that runs from 3rd grade through the SHSAT and SAT.
Enrichment A gives 3rd and 4th graders a strong start in math, English and writing, and prepares them for the New York State math and ELA tests.
What we teach in 3rd and 4th grade
Enrichment A covers the three subjects that matter most in the early grades, each taught by its own teacher:
- Math — grade-level topics taught step by step, with enough practice that every student can do the work on their own, not only follow along. The habits built here carry through to our math tutoring for grades 3–12.
- English — reading in class, plus assigned reading outside school, so vocabulary and comprehension grow faster than they would from the school day alone.
- Writing — short responses to what was read, corrected and returned, so students learn to organise an answer before the state tests ask them to.
The checkpoints along the way are the New York State math and ELA tests, which begin in 3rd grade, and the NYC gifted and talented programs. If a gifted program is the goal, see our G&T and NYS test prep page for how the two fit together.
How a week looks
Classes meet on Saturdays at our Flushing locations, in person or online. Families who want more practice between Saturdays can add weekday online tutoring, which is live with an instructor rather than recorded.
Who teaches
NYS-certified teachers lead every class, with teaching assistants on hand during and after class for students who need a question answered one more time. ABCMath has taught Flushing families this way for 30 years and more than 5,000 students.
What comes next
Students continue into 5th grade Enrichment A, where the same subjects deepen and the state test results start to count toward middle-school and Hunter options. From there the path runs to Hunter exam prep in 6th grade and SHSAT prep in 7th and 8th.
Frequently asked questions
Which tests do 3rd and 4th graders in NYC take?
New York State math and ELA tests start in 3rd grade and run every year through 8th grade. Enrichment A builds the reading, writing and math habits those tests measure, so the first test year is not the first time a child sees that kind of question.
Is Enrichment A only test prep?
No. The class covers math, English and writing as subjects in their own right. The state tests and gifted-program exams are checkpoints along the way, not the whole point.
My child is ahead in math but behind in reading. Does one class fit both?
Yes. Math and English/writing are taught by different teachers within the same program, and the English teacher assigns outside reading at a level that matches the child.
Where are classes held?
At our two Flushing locations, 43-55 Kissena Blvd and 140-22 Beech Ave, with online classes and weekday online tutoring also available.
