SAT & PSAT Prep in Flushing, Queens

Digital SAT Reading & Writing and Math classes for grades 10–12, taught by NYS-certified teachers since 1996.

The SAT is the one test that follows a student from junior year to the college application. ABCMath has run SAT classes in Flushing for 30 years, and our program has been rebuilt for the digital SAT: adaptive modules, the Bluebook app and the new question styles. Students from our 11th grade and 12th grade programs have gone on to Cornell, Harvard, Princeton, MIT and Johns Hopkins.

Who the SAT course is for

  • 10th graders building reading, grammar and algebra skills before the PSAT, and preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of 11th grade.
  • 11th graders preparing for a spring SAT, the most common first attempt.
  • 12th graders retaking in the fall for a higher score before early-decision and regular deadlines.

Students in 9th grade who want to start early are placed in our 9th grade English and math classes, which lead into the SAT track.

What is on the digital SAT

The SAT is taken on a computer in the College Board's Bluebook app. There are two sections, each split into two adaptive modules: how a student does on the first module decides whether the second module is harder or easier. Reading and Writing is 54 questions in 64 minutes; Math is 44 questions in 70 minutes, with a built-in Desmos calculator. The whole test runs 2 hours 14 minutes and is scored 400–1600, with each section scored 200–800. (Source: College Board.)

Because the first module decides the difficulty of the second, careless errors early in the test cost more than they used to. That changes how a student should pace the test, and it is why we teach strategy alongside content.

What we teach

Reading & Writing

  • Short-passage reading: main idea, inference, evidence and author's purpose
  • Vocabulary in context and transitions
  • Standard English conventions: punctuation, agreement, sentence boundaries
  • Rhetorical synthesis and data-based questions

Math

  • Algebra: linear equations, systems and inequalities
  • Advanced math: quadratics, exponentials, polynomials and functions
  • Problem solving and data analysis: ratios, percentages, statistics
  • Geometry and trigonometry
  • Using the Desmos calculator efficiently, and when not to

Every unit is followed by timed practice from the latest released tests, and students take full-length digital practice tests under real conditions so there are no surprises on test day.

How the course runs

  • In-person classes on weekends at 43-55 Kissena Blvd and 140-22 Beech Ave in Flushing.
  • Online classes taught live, for students outside Flushing or with weekend commitments.
  • Weekday online tutoring: an hour of math and an hour of English each week to work on the areas a practice test exposed. See weekday online tutoring.

Classes are taught by NYS-certified teachers, with teaching assistants available during and after class for questions.

Why families in Queens choose ABCMath

  • One place for the whole high-school path: Regents prep, AP tutoring and SAT, with teachers who know the student.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child start SAT prep?

Most of our students start in the summer before 11th grade or at the beginning of 11th grade, so they are ready for the PSAT in October and a first SAT in the spring. Students who want a head start can begin in 10th grade with our Reading & Writing classes, which also build the vocabulary and grammar that school English grades depend on.

Do you teach the digital SAT?

Yes. The SAT is now fully digital and taken in the College Board Bluebook app. Our course is built around the digital format: two adaptive modules per section, the built-in Desmos calculator, and the timing of the real test. Practice exams are taken the way the real test is taken.

Is the class in person or online?

Both. We run in-person SAT classes at our Flushing locations on Kissena Blvd and Beech Ave, and live online classes for students who cannot travel. Weekday online tutoring is available alongside either option.

How long is the SAT course?

Classes run by semester (fall, spring and summer). The semester dates and the current schedule are on our registration page, or call 718-888-7866 and we will tell you which section fits your child’s test date.

What if my child is weak in math but strong in reading?

The two SAT sections are taught separately, so we can put a student in the math level that matches a diagnostic result while keeping them in a higher reading and writing section. Weekday online tutoring adds extra time in the weaker subject.
