6th Grade Middle School Honor Class in Flushing, Queens
Middle School Honor Class — math, English, writing and Advanced Literature I, with Hunter exam preparation.
The Middle School Honor Class prepares 6th graders for the Hunter College High School entrance exam with math, English, writing and Advanced Literature I. Mr. Liu adds math contest questions for students who want a challenge.
What we teach in 6th grade
The Hunter College High School entrance exam is taken in 6th grade for admission in 7th. It is the first high-stakes exam most NYC students meet, and the 6th grade program is organised around it:
- Math — grade-level topics plus the multi-step problems the Hunter exam favours, taught step by step. Contest-style questions from the AMC 8 stretch the strongest students.
- English and Advanced Literature I — newspaper current events and classic literature read in class, with more reading assigned outside school.
- Writing — the Hunter exam includes an essay, so writing is taught and corrected every week, not left to the test.
Students also sit the New York State math and ELA tests this year; the same preparation covers both.
How a week looks
Saturday classes in Flushing, in person or online, with weekday online tutoring available for students who want live help with homework and extra practice between Saturdays.
Who teaches
NYS-certified teachers lead the classes, and the founder, Mr. Liu, teaches the math contest questions himself. Teaching assistants are available during and after class. The program has prepared Flushing students for Hunter and the specialized high schools for 30 years.
What comes next
After 6th grade, students move into 7th and 8th grade SHSAT preparation, which leads to the SHSAT crash course in 8th grade. Students coming up from elementary school can see the earlier year on the 5th grade page.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Hunter College High School entrance exam?
Students take it in 6th grade for admission to Hunter in 7th grade. Our 6th grade program is built around that exam, which tests math, English and an essay.
What is in the Middle School Honor Class?
Math, English, Writing and Advanced Literature I. The English teacher uses current events from newspapers and classic literature; the math teacher covers school topics and adds math contest questions.
Should a 6th grader also start SHSAT prep?
Not yet. The SHSAT is taken in 8th grade (and optionally 9th). Our 7th and 8th grade program is where SHSAT preparation begins; the 6th grade year builds the reading and math foundation it relies on.
What if my child is not applying to Hunter?
The class still fits. The Hunter exam is a demanding middle-school benchmark, and students who prepare for it are well ahead for the NYS tests and for the SHSAT two years later.
