5th Grade Math, ELA & Hunter Readiness in Flushing, Queens

Enrichment A for 5th graders — the year that sets up the Hunter exam.

Enrichment A in 5th grade builds math, English and writing ahead of grade level. This year's state test results also count toward Hunter College High School eligibility.

What we teach in 5th grade

5th grade is the last year of elementary school and the year whose results feed into middle-school placement and Hunter College High School eligibility. Enrichment A covers:

  • Math — fractions, decimals, ratios and the multi-step word problems that the New York State math test leans on, taught step by step with practice until it sticks.
  • English — in-class reading plus books assigned outside school, so comprehension and vocabulary are ahead of grade level by the time the 6th grade Hunter exam arrives.
  • Writing — structured responses to reading, which is the format both the state ELA test and the Hunter exam use.

Families aiming for NYC gifted programs can read how the state tests and G&T fit together on our gifted and talented test prep page.

How a week looks

Saturday classes at our Flushing locations, in person or online. Weekday online tutoring adds live practice between Saturdays for students who want it, and it is the most common add-on in the run-up to the state tests.

Who teaches

NYS-certified teachers, with teaching assistants available during and after class. The same teachers follow the curriculum from 3rd grade through 8th, so a 5th grader is being taught toward where the program goes next, not just toward this year's test.

What comes next

Students move on to 6th grade Hunter exam preparation, and after that to 7th and 8th grade SHSAT prep. Students coming from 4th grade can see the earlier year on the 3rd and 4th grade page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does 5th grade matter for Hunter?

The Hunter College High School entrance exam is taken in 6th grade, and 5th grade state test results are part of how students qualify to sit for it. Strong 5th grade math and ELA keeps that door open.

Is this the same class as 3rd and 4th grade?

It is the same Enrichment A program — math, English and writing — taught at a 5th grade level with more reading outside class and longer written responses.

Can my child join mid-year?

Register online or call 718-888-7866 and a representative will contact you about the current schedule and placement.

Do you offer online classes for 5th graders?

Yes. Classes run in person in Flushing and online, and weekday online tutoring is available in addition to Saturday classes.
