Coding Classes in Flushing, Queens
Python, Java, AP Computer Science A and artificial intelligence for high-school students, in person and online.
Programming is the one subject a student can start at any point and see results in a week. ABCMath's computer science track takes a high-school student from a first line of Python to AP Computer Science A and an introduction to artificial intelligence, taught in the same small-class format as our math classes.
Who the classes are for
- High-school students starting from zero who want a real skill and a project to show for it.
- Students heading for AP Computer Science A, which is taught in Java and needs a year of preparation.
- Strong math students who want to see what their algebra is for. Many of our coding students come from the AMC and math classes.
The track
Python
The first language. Variables, conditionals, loops, functions, lists and dictionaries, files, and then small projects: games, data tools, simple simulations. Students leave able to write a program that solves a problem they chose.
Java
Typed, object-oriented programming: classes and objects, methods, arrays, inheritance and interfaces. Java is the language of AP Computer Science A, and this class is the bridge to it.
AP Computer Science A
The full AP curriculum in Java, with the multiple-choice and free-response practice the May exam requires. See also AP tutoring.
Artificial intelligence
How models learn from data, with Python and real datasets: classification, prediction and the limits of each. Students build and evaluate small models and learn to read what the tools they use every day are actually doing.
How the classes run
- Weekend classes in person at 43-55 Kissena Blvd and 140-22 Beech Ave in Flushing, with students coding in class, not watching.
- Live online classes for students outside Flushing.
- Each class ends with a project the student can run, show and explain.
Why ABCMath for coding
- The same small-class teaching, with TAs on hand, that has worked for our math and science students for 30 years.
- A path, not a one-off workshop: Python to Java to AP Computer Science A to AI, with the next class ready when the student is.
- Coding alongside Regents, SAT and AP classes in one place, so the schedule works for a busy high-school student.
Frequently asked questions
Does my child need any coding experience?
No. The Python class starts from zero: variables, loops, functions and small projects. Students who already code are placed by what they can build, not by age.
Which language should my child start with?
Python for a first language: it reads almost like English, so students spend their time on logic rather than syntax. Java comes next for students heading toward AP Computer Science A, which is taught in Java.
What is in the artificial intelligence class?
How machine-learning models are trained and used, with Python and real data, so students understand what the tools they already use are doing. It follows the Python class.
Is the class in person or online?
Both. Weekend classes meet in Flushing at Kissena Blvd and Beech Ave, and a live online option is available.
Does this help with college applications?
AP Computer Science A gives a score colleges see, and a portfolio of projects is something students can point to in an application. Just as important, programming teaches the step-by-step reasoning that helps in math and science classes.
