AMC 8, 10, 12 & AIME Math Competition Prep in Flushing, Queens

The MAA’s American Mathematics Competitions program leads the nation in strengthening the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem-solvers. Through classroom resources and friendly competition, the MAA AMC program helps America’s educators identify talent and foster a love of mathematics. The MAA AMC program positively impacts the analytical skills needed for future careers in an innovative society.

The American Mathematics Competitions are a series of examinations and curriculum materials that build problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge in middle and high school students.

We offer the following AMC (American Mathematics Competition) Classes:

  • AMC 8
  • AMC 10
  • AMC 12
  • AIME

For years, Mr Liu has trained students for the American Mathematic Competition (AMC) program. Many of his students have been invited to participate in the prestigious American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) and the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). We will assess the students’ learning style and personalize study plans to build on their strengths that will help them to excel!

Who the classes are for

  • AMC 8 — middle school students (8th grade and below) who find school math easy and want something harder.
  • AMC 10 and AMC 12 — high school students, usually those in or beyond our SQ math sequence.
  • AIME — students who have qualified from the AMC 10 or 12 and want to prepare for the invitational.

Each student is assessed first and given a study plan that builds on their strengths.

How the AMC classes fit with the rest of the program

Competition math is not a separate track at ABCMath. Mr. Liu brings contest questions into the regular 6th grade and 7th and 8th grade math classes, so students who take to them have a natural next step into AMC 8, and then AMC 10 and 12 in high school. The reasoning habits built here are the same ones the SHSAT and the SAT math section reward: reading a problem carefully, choosing an approach rather than being told one, and checking the answer.

Frequently asked questions

What grades are the AMC 8, AMC 10 and AMC 12 for?

The AMC 8 is for students in 8th grade and below, the AMC 10 for 10th grade and below, and the AMC 12 for 12th grade and below. Top scorers on the AMC 10 and 12 are invited to the AIME.

Does my child need to be in a gifted program to join?

No. Students need to be comfortable with grade-level math and willing to work on problems that take more than one step. We assess each student and build a plan around their strengths.

How is competition math different from school math?

School math asks students to apply a method they were just taught. Competition problems do not say which method to use, so students learn to reason, try approaches and check their work. That skill carries into the SHSAT and SAT.

Who teaches the AMC classes?

Mr. Liu, the founder of ABCMath, has trained students for the AMC program for years. Many of his students have been invited to the AIME and the USAMO.
